The nine worlds
The Nine Worlds of the Norsemen were Asgard, Vanaheim, and Alfheim which were on the highest level. Midgard(Earth), Jotunheim, Nidavellir, and Svartalfheim were located on the middle level. And Niflheim(Hel) and Muspellheim were on the lowest level.
Asgard: Asgard was home to the Aesir, warrior gods and goddesses. A rainbow bridge called the Bifrost connected this world with Midgard. The god Heimdall, was the guardian of the rainbow bridge.The Well of Urd was located in Asgard.
Vanaheim: Vanaheim was home to the Vanir, fertility gods and goddesses.

Midgard: Midgard was the world which humans inhabited. Their world was surrounded by an Ocean, thought impossible to cross. A horrid serpent named Jormungand dwelled in the Ocean, he was so large he encircled Midgard and could hold his tail in his mouth.The Fountain of Mimir was located in Midgard.
Jotunheim: Jotunheim was the world in which the Giants lived. There were three species of Giant: Frost, Fire, and Mountain. Giants were usually the enemy of the gods. They had a stronghold known as Utgard, although it is unknown exactly where it was.
Nidavellir: Nidavellir was a land filled with caves and holes in which the Dwarfs lived.
Svartalfheim: Svartalfheim was the land where the Dark Elves resided.
Niflheim: Niflheim was the land which the dead inhabited. It was a depressing place of ice and eternal darkness. It was ruled by Hel, the cruel Queen of the Dead. She was extremely beautiful on the top half of her body, and a rotting corpse below. The entrance to Niflheim was guarded by the fierce dog, Garm.
Muspellheim: Muspellheim was a land of raging fires. It was watched over by Surt, who protected it with his flaming sword. He waited to unleash the fiery creatures of Muspellheim upon the gods when the time of Ragnarok came.
